Gluten intolerance may be related to fructan

In summary, a study found that fructans, a type of FODMAP, were responsible for inducing symptoms in individuals with self-reported non-celiac gluten sensitivity. This was determined through a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study and measured by a gastrointestinal symptom rating scale. This study also clarifies that fructans are different from gluten and are found in fermentable carbohydrates. An IBS support site provides general food choices for individuals with IBS.

Fructan, Rather Than Gluten, Induces Symptoms in Patients With Self-reported Non-celiac Gluten Sensitivity. Skodje GI et al., Nov 1 2017
CONCLUSIONS:
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study of individuals with self-reported non-celiac gluten sensitivity, we found fructans to induce symptoms, measured by the gastrointestinal symptom rating scale irritable bowel syndrome version.

Fructan, Rather Than Gluten,
"Than?" I've had my suspicions regarding "gluten allergies/sensitivity;" guess we'll see/find out.

1. What is fructan?

Fructan is a type of carbohydrate found in many foods, including wheat, onions, and garlic. It is a chain of fructose molecules and is classified as a fructose-based oligosaccharide.

2. How is fructan related to gluten intolerance?

Fructan and gluten are both found in wheat, and some people who are sensitive to gluten may also experience symptoms when consuming fructan. This is because both gluten and fructan can trigger an immune response in some individuals.

3. What are the symptoms of fructan intolerance?

The symptoms of fructan intolerance are similar to those of gluten intolerance and may include bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. However, fructan intolerance is not as well understood and may also cause symptoms such as headaches and fatigue.

4. Can fructan intolerance be diagnosed?

Currently, there are no specific tests to diagnose fructan intolerance. However, individuals can try an elimination diet to see if their symptoms improve when avoiding foods high in fructan. It is important to consult a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your diet.

5. Is a gluten-free diet also fructan-free?

Not necessarily. While a gluten-free diet may also limit the consumption of fructan-containing foods, it is not always the case. Some gluten-free foods, such as bread and pasta, may still contain fructan. It is important to read food labels carefully and consult a healthcare professional for guidance on a fructan-free diet.
