SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the uncertainty of "n2" given the uncertainty in lambda and a constant value for n1 (which is 2). The user, Owen, attempts to apply the error propagation formula errorλ = error n * dλ/dn but struggles to derive dy/dn. A key formula provided in the discussion is dλ/λ = 2 * (n1^2 * dn2) / (n2 * |n2^2 - n1^2|), which is crucial for calculating the uncertainty accurately.

PREREQUISITES
 • Understanding of error propagation in physics
 • Familiarity with calculus, specifically derivatives
 • Knowledge of constants and variables in mathematical equations
 • Basic grasp of uncertainty measurement techniques
NEXT STEPS
 • Study error propagation methods in physics
 • Learn how to derive and apply partial derivatives
 • Explore the concept of uncertainty in measurements
 • Investigate practical examples of calculating uncertainties in experiments
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics or engineering courses, researchers dealing with experimental data, and anyone involved in uncertainty analysis in scientific calculations.

Homework Statement

I need to find the uncertainty on "n2" I have the uncertainty on lambda, n1 is not a variable - its 2, R is a constant. Only things that have errors are lambda and n

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

Tried working out using calculus, but every time I do it I get a different aswer

Im trying to use errorλ= error n * dλ/dn

But I can't get dy/dn - I've been up all night - don't judge me

Any help would be seriously SERIOUSLY helpful!

Thanks!
Owen.

I think that the error is
\frac{d \lambda}{\lambda}=2 \frac{n_1^2 \; dn_2}{n_2 \: |n_2^2-n_1^2|}
sorry - didnt get a chance to thank you for that - was too busy rushing out to get the project handed in - thanks a lot! :)
