SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on understanding the direction of torque in statics equilibrium problems. The user struggles with the concept of the moment arm and the application of the right-hand rule. To clarify these concepts, resources such as HyperPhysics are recommended for further exploration. Mastery of torque direction is essential for accurately formulating net torque equations in physics problems.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts, particularly statics.
  • Familiarity with torque and moment arm definitions.
  • Knowledge of the right-hand rule for determining rotational direction.
  • Ability to formulate equations related to equilibrium conditions.
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the concept of torque and moment arms in detail.
  • Practice applying the right-hand rule in various torque scenarios.
  • Explore equilibrium equations in statics problems.
  • Review additional resources on torque from HyperPhysics and similar educational sites.

Homework Statement

I'm working on statics equilibrium problems right now. And I have the HARDEST time finding the direction of torque when I'm trying to formulate my net torque equation. I can't seem to grasp the concept of the moment arm and the direction of the force. I've tried to understand the right hand rule but I am still left very confused. Any physics genius who could help me better understand this, I would appreciate it very much.
