Help on personal statement for summer research

AI Thread Summary
When applying for summer research programs in physics, crafting a personal statement is crucial. Key advice includes writing sincerely and honestly while highlighting genuine research interests, even if they are not highly specific. Previous experiences, such as internships, can be valuable to mention, as they demonstrate practical engagement in research. Additionally, understanding the expectations of the programs and any relevant skills or software knowledge can enhance an application. Universities like UCLA and Caltech are popular choices, but applicants should also consider which institutions have a higher acceptance rate for summer research positions.

What I did

Last summer I had a great Internship at the NSF, and although it wasn't a research internship on paper I ended up doing research a small but fun research project. Coming from a small school in Puerto Rico, I had the same problem as you did, I didn't know what to write for my statement. What I decided at the time was to write something as sincere and honest as possible but at the same time displaying my most profound research interests although I knew that it wasn't very specific. It worked for me last year and I'm going to try it again this year. I hope that helps

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
