Hidden object at bottom of pool with a raft.

In summary, the problem involves a thief hiding a diamond in the bottom of a cylindrical pool of water. The thief uses a circular raft on the surface of the water, with the center of the raft directly above the diamond. Using the critical angle formula and SOHCAHTOA, the minimum radius of the raft that will completely hide the diamond is found to be approximately 3.42m. It is important to carry enough significant figures throughout the calculations.

Homework Statement

A thief hides a diamond in the center of the bottom of a cylindrical pool of water of depth 3m and diameter 10m by placing a circular raft on the surface of the water. The center of the raft is directly above the diamond. What is the minimum radius of the raft that will completely hide the diamond?

Homework Equations

Critical angle formula.
SOHCAHTOA

The Attempt at a Solution

I found the critical angle Theta(c) = sin^-1(n2/n1) = 1/1.33 = 48.7 degrees.

The depth of the pool is 3m. tan48.7 = O/A = 3(tan48.7) = 3.41, which is the radius of the raft.

Thanks.

I get a raft radius of 3.42m. It looks like your method is good, but you may want to be careful about carrying enough significant figures through the calculations right to the end (where the result is rounded).

1. What is the purpose of the hidden object at the bottom of the pool?

The purpose of the hidden object at the bottom of the pool is to create a challenging and fun activity for swimmers to find and retrieve the object. It can also serve as a way to practice and improve underwater swimming and diving skills.

2. How does the raft affect the hidden object at the bottom of the pool?

The raft can affect the hidden object at the bottom of the pool by either covering it or moving it around. It adds an extra layer of difficulty and strategy to the activity as swimmers must navigate around the raft to find the hidden object.

3. Can the hidden object at the bottom of the pool be harmful to swimmers?

No, the hidden object at the bottom of the pool is typically a safe and harmless item such as a toy or weighted object. However, it is still important for swimmers to use caution and follow proper pool safety rules while participating in this activity.

4. How deep is the pool required to be for the hidden object activity?

The depth of the pool will depend on the size and weight of the hidden object, as well as the swimming abilities of the participants. Generally, a pool with a depth of at least 5 feet would be suitable for this activity.

5. Is there a recommended age or skill level for participating in the hidden object activity?

The hidden object activity can be enjoyed by swimmers of all ages and skill levels, as long as they are comfortable and confident swimming underwater. It may be more challenging for younger or less experienced swimmers, but it can also be a great way for them to improve their swimming abilities.
