Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding suitable housings for PCB boards in a robot project, focusing on the challenges of mounting and stacking boards of varying sizes. Participants explore different solutions and resources for electronic enclosures.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that standardizing the size of the boards could simplify housing solutions, proposing the use of stackable mounting pillars.
  • Another participant recommends creating a backplane board with edge connectors to accommodate various board sizes, drawing a parallel to PC motherboards and expansion cards.
  • A different participant mentions Radio Shack as a potential source for electronic project boxes in various configurations, along with eBay as an alternative for sourcing enclosures.
  • One participant advises performing a Google image search for electronic enclosures to find visual examples and options.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple approaches and resources for housing PCB boards, with no consensus on a single solution. Various suggestions remain open for consideration.

Contextual Notes

Participants express differing opinions on the best approach to housing, with some suggestions depending on the uniformity of board sizes and others on the availability of specific products.

Who May Find This Useful

Hobbyists and professionals working on electronics projects, particularly those involving robotics and PCB design, may find the discussion relevant.

As my hobby, I'm working on a robot. I've got the electronics mostly done, and it works. Programming is not a problem, since I'm a professional developer. What's got me stumped is housing the PCB boards.

I've look at some products online, but I can't seem to find anything that would allow me to mount and stack several boards in a housing. I've got boards raging from 3" X 2 1/2" to 5" X 7". I'm being rough with the figures here, no matter, where do you find housing generic enough to do this?

What do you use for spacing boards of different sizes in a housing? I could probably use more than an inch of vertical spacing between boards (being able to choose custom spacings would be good).
