Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around issues related to rendering LaTeX expressions on the Physics Forums platform, specifically focusing on how to keep these expressions on the same line. Participants explore potential solutions, browser compatibility, and specific cases of rendering discrepancies.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about keeping LaTeX expressions on the same line.
  • Another suggests using ## ## as delimiters for inline LaTeX, providing an example that appears to work correctly in some contexts.
  • Concerns are raised about a potential bug affecting rendering, with one participant indicating they will move the thread to a feedback forum.
  • Participants report varying results across different browsers, with some stating that the issue seems to be browser-specific, particularly in Safari.
  • One participant notes that the problem is only present in Safari, while Firefox renders correctly on Mac OS.
  • Another participant tests various LaTeX expressions and finds inconsistencies in rendering across devices and browsers.
  • One participant mentions that using a built-in VPN in Opera resolves the rendering issue, raising questions about the underlying problem.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing experiences with LaTeX rendering across various browsers, indicating that there is no consensus on a single solution or cause for the discrepancies.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of clarity on whether the rendering issues are due to specific browser versions, device settings, or other factors. Some participants mention that certain expressions render correctly while others do not, suggesting a complex interaction between the LaTeX syntax and the rendering engine.

When I use Latex, the expression always comes out on a separate line. How do I keep the expression on the same line?

I'm guessing you mean at PF? In that case, use ## ## as delimiters. For example

The famous relation ##E=mc^2## was derived by Einstein

renders as

The famous relation ##E = mc^2## was derived by Einstein

Whoa, there seems to be a bug. I'll move the thread to the feedback forum.

Looks fine in mobile Firefox on Android. Possibly browser specific?

@Greg Bernhardt : I've just checked, and the problem is only in Safari. Firefox renders correctly (on Mac OS 10.13.5).

This is a new problem, to add to the previous one with MathJax in Safari.

How about using ##y=mx+b## number signs? Testing it

And ##E=m c^2## formula?

Safari on iPad Pro.

This one comes out ok in Safari.

Edit:

Both formulas come out correctly, but the one 1 posted in #2 still displays incorrectly. What is going on?

The equation in the last line renders just fine for me. I'm using IE 11 on Win 7.

It doesn't work on Opera 54 either.

As of Safari 11.1.1, it renders correctly.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, and after post #9, I checked with all 3 (Firefox, Opera & Chrome latest versions), and none of them renders it correctly.
So is it a device specific issue?

Hey, I just figured that if I use the Opera built-in VPN on Windows 7, the equations render correctly. But really it should render at all times. Can someone tell me what's wrong?
