How Can We Enhance PhysicForums for Internet Explorer Users?

AI Thread Summary
PhysicForums presents issues for Internet Explorer 6 users, particularly due to persistent error messages prompting the download of Flash 8 player. Users with slow connections may not have the latest service pack from Microsoft, leading to Active X being disabled and rendering Flash content unnecessary. A suggestion was made to include an option in the control panel to disable Flash loading on pages, favoring the Prime skin over Nexus, which does not use Flash. The user later realized the option to switch skins was available, prompting a retraction of the initial suggestion. The discussion highlights the need for better support for older browsers on the platform.

I'm sorry but physicforums really bothers me when I use internet explorer 6 to visit it because I get 2 Error messages asking if I want to download Flash 8 player (I always click NO) for every page that I click on.

I do not have the lastest service pack from Microsoft because I have a slow connection and the number of patches are just immense. Hence I have Active X off, which means the Flash content will NOT have been displayed anyway (so there is no point in me downloading the Flash 8 player).

I generally use FireFox so this is not much of an issue, but I thought the wonderful webmaster may be interested in this issue. If I may provide a suggestion, we could have an option in our control panel that prohibits Flash from being loaded in our pages.

Use the Prime skin instead of Nexus. Prime doesn't use flash. Just scroll down to the bottom of the screen and look for the drop-down menu on the left side of the screen to switch from Nexus to Prime.

Ooops! I never even considered looking at anything below the last post in the page.

In that case webmaster, please feel free to ignore my above mentioned suggestion.

Thanks Moon!

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
This came up in my job today (UXP). Never thought to raise it here on PF till now. Hyperlinks really should be underlined at all times. PF only underlines them when they are rolled over. Colour alone (especially dark blue/purple) makes it difficult to spot a hyperlink in a large block of text (or even a small one). Not everyone can see perfectly. Even if they don't suffer from colour deficiency, not everyone has the visual acuity to distinguish two very close shades of text. Hover actions...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
