How did eukaryotic cells evolve?

Hi! I came across the concept of endosymbiosis being the way by which eukaryotic cells evolved and that all cell organelles are remnants of prokaryotic cells that lost their ability to survive independently. Is this just speculation or is there a solid scientific basis to this claim? Can anybody suggest some relevant material that I can read on the above subject?
