Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the conversion of molar volumes expressed in different units, specifically focusing on the interpretation of units such as cm3 mol-1 and cm3. Participants explore how to handle these units when calculating differences in molar volumes.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks how to find the difference in molar volumes given in cm3 mol-1 and whether the result should be expressed in cm3.
  • Another participant states that when discussing "molar volume," the 'per mole' aspect is understood, suggesting that the units can be simplified to cm3.
  • A subsequent post reiterates the understanding of molar volume and questions whether conversion is necessary for a specific value of 2.784 cm3 mol-1.
  • One participant confirms that it is acceptable to express the molar volume as cm3 when it is understood that it refers to molar volume.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the 'per mole' aspect of molar volume is understood, allowing for the use of cm3 without conversion. However, there is some uncertainty regarding the necessity of conversion in specific contexts.

Contextual Notes

There is a lack of clarity on whether specific conversion steps are required when dealing with different initial units, and the discussion does not resolve this ambiguity.

hello everyone, i have a question involving molar volumes. if i have to find the difference in molar volumes, which have initial units of cm^3 mol^-1. i know i subtract them, but is the question asks for the answer in cm^3, what do i do?

When you are describing "MOLAR VOLUME" the 'per mole' is understood and thus the units are cm^3 (cm^3/mol if you want to be pedantic).

so if i have a molar volume of 2.784 cm^3 mol^-1 its there is nothing that i have to convert?

Yes, you could say 2.784 cm^3 mol^-1 or just 2.784 cm^3 if it was understood that you were describing a molar volume.
