How Do You Calculate the Total Mass in Kilograms from Atomic Mass Units?

SUMMARY

To calculate the total mass in kilograms from atomic mass units (amu), multiply the number of atoms by the atomic mass in amu and then convert to kilograms using the conversion factor 1 amu = 1.66053904 x 10-27 kg. For a helium atom with a mass of 4.0 amu and 6.0 x 1024 atoms, the total mass is calculated as follows: Total Mass (kg) = 6.0 x 1024 atoms * 4.0 amu * 1.66053904 x 10-27 kg/amu, resulting in a total mass of approximately 3.984 kg.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of atomic mass units (amu)
  • Basic knowledge of scientific notation
  • Familiarity with unit conversion
  • Basic arithmetic operations
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the concept of atomic mass and its significance in chemistry
  • Learn about unit conversion techniques in scientific calculations
  • Explore the implications of mass calculations in molecular biology
  • Study the relationship between mass and moles in chemistry
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, physicists, and anyone involved in scientific calculations related to atomic mass and molecular weight.

I have a complete brain freeze sorry, and cannot work this out.

I have a helium atom of 4.0 amu and there are 6.0 x 10^24 atoms. How do I calculate the total mass in kg please?

Thanks
