How Does a CRT Oscilloscope Compare in Terms of Setup and Portability?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the comparison of CRT oscilloscopes with portable alternatives, focusing on aspects such as setup ease, portability, and convenience rather than accuracy. Participants explore different types of portable oscilloscopes, including those that connect to PCs.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express a preference for portable oscilloscopes that prioritize ease of setup and convenience over accuracy.
  • One participant inquires about the possibility of using a battery-powered oscilloscope.
  • Another suggests that a basic oscilloscope with a single channel would suffice for their needs.
  • A participant advocates for dual-channel oscilloscopes with logic analyzers, arguing that they offer better value and performance.
  • Concerns are raised about the performance of specific models, with one participant sharing their experience with software but not hardware, emphasizing the importance of sample rate and ADC bit width.
  • A link is provided to a specific product that the participant believes offers superior performance compared to lower-end alternatives.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best type of oscilloscope, with differing opinions on the necessity of single versus dual-channel models and varying assessments of specific products.

Contextual Notes

Some limitations include the lack of detailed specifications for the discussed oscilloscopes and the dependence on individual use cases and preferences.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for individuals considering the purchase of a portable oscilloscope, particularly those interested in ease of use and convenience over high accuracy.

Anyone got any experience?

Don't need anything with the accuracy of a CRT oscilloscope but ease of setup, repeatability, portability and convenience are more important.

Do you mean like a portable battery-powered oscilloscope?

Just a basic one wot you can plug into PC. Only need one channel.

i've been drooling over one of those for a while now, i wouldn't waste money on a single channel one though. at least dual channel with logic analyizer > 10mhz.

But are they any good?

i've played with the software and it looks good, i haven't used the hardware so i couldn't tell you how well it works, sample rate and bit width of the adc will determine the performance, check this out:

thats what i'd get, for the same price as one of the lower end picoscopes this is better in every way for the same price.
