How Does Projectile Angle Affect Range and Distance?

Click For Summary
The discussion focuses on calculating the range of a stone thrown at an angle, specifically 35 degrees with an initial speed of 20 m/s and the maximum range at 24 m/s. The formula used for these calculations is R = (Vo^2*sin(2 theta)) / g. The user calculated the distances as 38.35m for the first question and 58.77m for the second but received incorrect feedback. A participant confirmed that the calculations are correct if the stone is indeed thrown at the specified angle and speed. Clarification on the problem's parameters may be necessary to resolve the discrepancy.

Homework Statement

How far will a stone travel over level ground if it is thrown upward at an angle of 35 degrees with respect to the horizontal and with a speed of 20 m/s?

What is the maximum range that can be achieved if a stone is thrown with an initial speed of 24 m/s?

The Attempt at a Solution

I've worked out both questions using the formula:

R = (Vo^2*sin(2 theta)) / g

For the first question I calculated a distance of 38.35m, and for the second (using the angle 45°) 58.77m. However, both of the answers have been marked incorrect. I've tried different sig figs etc. Am I doing something wrong? Is there any other way to solve these two problems? Thank you in advance for any help!

Not sure where you got that formula but, 38.35 and 58.77 is correct assuming they mean the stone is thrown with that speed along that angle.

The book claims the answer is that all the magnitudes are the same because "the gravitational force on the penguin is the same". I'm having trouble understanding this. I thought the buoyant force was equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. Weight depends on mass which depends on density. Therefore, due to the differing densities the buoyant force will be different in each case? Is this incorrect?
