SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the physics problem involving two twins running in opposite directions affecting the motion of a cart. The first twin runs east at top speed with both masses, causing the cart to move west. After the first twin jumps off, the second twin runs west at the same speed, resulting in the cart moving east with only one mass. The conclusion drawn is that the answer is B, supported by the principles of momentum and frame of reference. The participants emphasize the importance of understanding changing mass and its impact on motion.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Newton's laws of motion
  • Familiarity with concepts of momentum and mass
  • Knowledge of frame of reference in physics
  • Basic problem-solving skills in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of conservation of momentum in varying mass systems
  • Explore detailed examples of frame of reference in physics problems
  • Learn about the effects of mass changes on acceleration and velocity
  • Review advanced problems involving multiple bodies in motion
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators teaching mechanics, and anyone interested in understanding the dynamics of motion involving multiple masses and frame of reference challenges.

The Attempt at a Solution

My first attempt was that since one of the twins runs east at top speed (with both masses) then the cart moves west and then he jumps off. Then after the second twin runs with the same speed west, the cart (with only one mass this time and the same speed) would move east, and he'd jump off. So I decided that B should be the answer. Is that correct?

I know my intuition isn't good for this one! Definitely worth working out. Beware of the changing mass and the difficult choices for frame of reference.

I think that is the correct answer, but can you articulate why?
