SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the relative position of two boats after one experiences engine failure. The first boat travels 35 km at an angle of 15 degrees west of south, while the second boat travels 42 km at 23 degrees south of west. Vector components are calculated using trigonometric functions, resulting in a direction vector of [-30, 18, 0]. The angle to the distressed boat is determined to be tan-1(18/30) degrees south of east, providing a clear method for finding the distance and direction between the two boats.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of vector components and trigonometry
  • Familiarity with angles and their representation in navigation
  • Knowledge of basic physics principles related to motion
  • Ability to perform calculations involving sine and cosine functions
NEXT STEPS
  • Study vector addition and subtraction in physics
  • Learn about navigation angles and their applications in maritime contexts
  • Explore trigonometric functions and their use in real-world problem solving
  • Investigate the principles of relative motion in two-dimensional space
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics or mathematics, maritime navigators, and anyone interested in solving vector-related problems in navigation scenarios.

Homework Statement

A boat leaves San Pedro and travels 35 km 15* west of south before its engine dies. You left San Pedro earlier in the morning and have traveled 42 km 23* south of west by the time the first boat's distress all reaches you. How far from and in what direction is the first boat relative to you at that point?

Homework Equations

for the other boat:
bx=-35sin15
by=-35cos15
bz=0

for your boat:
bx=-42cos23
by=-42sin23
bz=0

your boat components - other boat components = direction

magnitude (your boat-other boat)= distance away

The Attempt at a Solution

Direction=[-30, 18, 0] (what directions is this . .)

distance=42

The direction you have looks like its from the distressed boat to you. Your vector to the distressed boat looks to me like it should be tan-1(18/30) degrees south of East.
