SUMMARY

The fire produced by burning vegetable oil can reach temperatures between 600-700°F at its flash point, which poses significant risks when water is introduced to an oil fire. Pouring water onto a burning bowl of vegetable oil can cause a violent reaction, scattering the oil and potentially leading to a larger fire. Understanding the adiabatic flame temperature is crucial, as it indicates that oil can be heated beyond typical cooking temperatures until molecular dissociation occurs.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of flash points and combustion temperatures
  • Knowledge of fire safety protocols
  • Familiarity with the properties of vegetable oils
  • Basic principles of thermodynamics related to combustion
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the adiabatic flame temperature and its implications for various substances
  • Study fire suppression techniques for oil fires
  • Learn about the chemical properties of different vegetable oils and their flash points
  • Investigate safe cooking practices to prevent oil fires
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for chefs, culinary professionals, safety officers, and anyone involved in cooking or fire safety management who seeks to understand the risks associated with burning vegetable oil.

I actually would like to know two things...

How hot is the fire from burning vegetable oil straight up? (like in a bowl)

and

How hot is vegetable oil fire when a bowl of oil is on fire and then water is poured onto it? (big fire)

I googled but only found flash point info and how to cook lol.

Which oil?

Generally Flash is 600-700 Farenheit, and that means boom in your face, which scatter the oil, thus diminsihing the heat.

In theory you could heat oil to any temp you want until the molecules dissociate.
