SUMMARY

Grainger's part numbering system consists of 5-digit codes where the first digit is a number (0-9) and the subsequent four digits can be any combination of numbers (0-9) and letters (A-Z). This results in a total of 16,796,160 possible unique part numbers, calculated using the formula 10 x 36 x 36 x 36 x 36. This systematic approach allows Grainger to efficiently manage a vast inventory while maintaining a concise part number format.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of combinatorial mathematics
  • Familiarity with alphanumeric systems
  • Basic knowledge of inventory management systems
  • Awareness of industrial supply chain operations
NEXT STEPS
  • Research combinatorial mathematics for inventory systems
  • Explore inventory management software options
  • Learn about alphanumeric coding systems in logistics
  • Investigate best practices in part number assignment
USEFUL FOR

Supply chain analysts, inventory managers, industrial supply professionals, and anyone interested in inventory coding systems.

If anyone is not familiar with Grainger, they are an industrial supply company that sells just about everything you can imagine. I've always been particularly impressed by the fact that even though they carry so many parts, their part numbers are all 5 digits. I believe the first digit is always a number, and the next 4 digits are any combination of numbers and letters.

I'd like to see the math showing how many possible part numbers Grainger can have with this system.
