Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a brain teaser involving the ages of two individuals, Marty and Adam. Participants explore the relationships between their ages and attempt to determine Adam's age based on the information provided in the teaser. The scope includes mathematical reasoning and problem-solving related to age-related puzzles.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Mathematical reasoning
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses doubt about the existence of a solution, suggesting the problem may be unsolvable or lacking sufficient information.
  • Another participant proposes that Adam is 18 years old, but does not provide a detailed explanation for this conclusion.
  • A different participant calculates that when Marty was 18, Adam would have been 12, indicating a potential solution but not confirming it as definitive.
  • Another participant challenges the previous claims by stating that there is not enough information to determine Adam's age conclusively.
  • One participant presents a mathematical representation of the problem, suggesting that there is sufficient information to solve it, and notes that the age differential is preserved.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on Adam's age. Some propose specific ages while others argue that the information is insufficient to arrive at a definitive answer.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights potential limitations in the problem's formulation, including assumptions about the relationships between the ages and the clarity of the information provided.

OK...a friend of mine sent me this brain teaser and I haven't been able to crack it...I'm starting to think that maybe he made it up himself and there is no possible solution...to me its a dead end unless there's something I'm missing...I even tried googling it and found nothing...so here it is...

Marty is 24 years old. Marty is twice as old as Adam was when Marty was as old as Adam is now. How old is Adam?

If you know the answer or figure it out...post it here or pm me. :rolleyes:

Let me think... 18?

When Marty was 18, Adam would have been 12.

Yep. That works.

and how did you guys come up with that answer? Adam was 12 when Marty was as old as Adam is now. There is not enough information

Code:
M2

A2     M1

       A1

We have:
M2 = 24
A2 = M1
M2 - A2 = M1 - A1
M2 = 2*A1

Plenty of information.

yea as i posted that i was thinking the age differential is preserved
