The discussion centers around Janus's PF Insights article titled "How Representative is the Night Sky?" Participants express appreciation for the article's insights into the relationship between various astronomical factors. A specific point of confusion arises regarding the placement of white dwarfs in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, with a suggestion that they should be located in the lower left instead of the lower right. The conversation highlights the importance of accuracy in scientific writing and the role of editors. Overall, the thread emphasizes the value of understanding the complexities of the night sky.

That was an awesome article, Janus! I had no idea of the relationship between all those different factors! It's interesting how you start with a plot of visual magnitude vs distance and gradually morph everything until you get to the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram!

Some 8 years ago I posted some experiments using 2 Software Defined Radios slaved to a common clock. The idea was measure small thermal noise by making correlation measurements between the IQ samples from each radio. This is a project that has kinda smoldered in the background where I've made progress in fits and starts. Since most (all?) RA signals are small thermal signals it seemed like the technique should be a natural approach. A recent thread discussing the feasibility of using SDRs to...
3I/ATLAS, also known as C/2025 N1 (ATLAS) and formerly designated as A11pl3Z, is an iinterstellar comet. It was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) station at Río Hurtado, Chile on 1 July 2025. Note: it was mentioned (as A11pl3Z) by DaveE in a new member's introductory thread. https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/brian-cox-lead-me-here.1081670/post-7274146 https://earthsky.org/space/new-interstellar-object-candidate-heading-toward-the-sun-a11pl3z/ One...
This thread is dedicated to the beauty and awesomeness of our Universe. If you feel like it, please share video clips and photos (or nice animations) of space and objects in space in this thread. Your posts, clips and photos may by all means include scientific information; that does not make it less beautiful to me (n.b. the posts must of course comply with the PF guidelines, i.e. regarding science, only mainstream science is allowed, fringe/pseudoscience is not allowed). n.b. I start this...
