SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on methods to cover a metal object with a plastic casing, specifically seeking a solution that provides a smooth finish while completely concealing the metal. Participants suggest using techniques such as 3D printing, Plasti Dip for a flexible coating, and powder coating for durability. The user specifies that the casing should be terminally closed without any openings for inserting or removing the metal object, which weighs approximately half a pound.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of 3D printing techniques and materials
  • Familiarity with Plasti Dip applications and properties
  • Knowledge of powder coating processes and benefits
  • Basic principles of thermal adhesion for coatings
NEXT STEPS
  • Research 3D printing design software for creating custom casings
  • Explore the properties and applications of Plasti Dip in industrial settings
  • Investigate powder coating techniques and equipment for metal objects
  • Learn about thermal adhesion methods for applying coatings to metal surfaces
USEFUL FOR

Manufacturers, product designers, and DIY enthusiasts looking to effectively cover metal objects with durable plastic casings.

Hi, I want to cover this piece of metal (A) with a plastic cover (white line B) that fits but I am not sure how that is created...do I need 3D printing?Has to be like an encapsulating plastic box that fits, hiding the underlying metal thing seen in the picture A...so the results is a smooth plastic surface, hiding completely the metal underneath...Does anyone know how this is done?

Out of curiosity, what is that metal thing? How heavy is it?

Do you want the casing to completely cover it with some sort of closure mechanism? Or will one end be open for inserting & removing the metal object?

its about half a pound. I want completely cover , closing mechanism not needed. I want terminal closing. Does not need to open for inserting & removing the metal object.

Just how hard and durable does the coating have to be? Perhaps something like Plasti Dip (https://plastidip.com/applications/), intended for tool handles, might work in your application?
