How to study the static friction coefficent

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around understanding the static friction coefficient, particularly its behavior when forces exceed its limit and the implications of transitioning to kinetic friction.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants explore the nature of the static friction coefficient, questioning its constancy and the conditions under which kinetic friction takes over. There are inquiries about the relationship between static and kinetic coefficients, including whether any kinetic coefficients can exceed static ones.

Discussion Status

Participants are actively engaging with the concepts, with some providing clarifications about the transition from static to kinetic friction. There is an exploration of different interpretations regarding the values of static and kinetic coefficients, but no consensus has been reached.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express uncertainty about the definitions and behaviors of static and kinetic friction coefficients, indicating a need for further exploration of these concepts.

i need to know how to study the static friction coefficient like what happens if it exceeds its limit what happens why the least value of static coefficient is static

Once you exceed the force of static friction can resist then you get kinetic friction. That is the friction on a moving object. Its coefficient is almost always less than static friction.

Wait, kgbgru, are you telling me some kinetic coefficients can be more than their respective static ones?

I have never seen one that is greater but some are quite close.

That makes more sense. :)

static friction tries to remove the effect of any force acting along the surface.
its value changes according to the need. if it cannot remove its effect then kinetic friction acts.
actually the force changes
