AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around a humorous take on a scenario involving a volunteer who tasted plutonium, highlighting the absurdity of such an action. Participants reflect on the risks associated with high-stakes research, referencing a physics professor's quip about grad students being tasked with dangerous experiments. The conversation also touches on a historical context, noting that a Russian volunteered for this during the Cold War. Additionally, there's a mention of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and its detectable odor, which adds a layer of seriousness to the otherwise lighthearted banter. The overall tone combines humor with a recognition of the potential dangers in scientific experimentation.

Hah ha! Classic "you're doing it wrong" scenario.

On the bright side (sort of), that claim has a source!

I wonder who volunteered for that.

As one of my physics professors was fond of saying (he did high power laser research), "And then you get the grad student to flip the switch..."

:-p

Apparently it was a Russian who volunteered back during the Cold War.

That reminds me about "HCN has a almond-like odor that can be detected at concentrations ten times higher than the lethal level".

Jokes aside, it didn't have to be someone tasting plutonium for a purpose - could be some kind of accident. Not saving the information about the taste would be a waste of opportunity.
