Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the relationship between tidal forces and magnetic forces, exploring whether they are connected or distinct phenomena. Participants consider the nature of these forces and their origins, with a focus on gravitational interactions and geomagnetism.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants assert that tidal forces and magnetic forces are not related.
  • One participant questions the reasoning behind the separation of these forces, suggesting a deeper exploration of their root causes.
  • A participant provides an explanation of tides as a result of gravitational interactions, primarily with the moon, and describes geomagnetism as originating from the Earth's core, indicating that these processes are separate.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is no consensus on the relationship between tidal forces and magnetic forces, with some participants firmly stating they are unrelated while others invite further discussion on the topic.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully explored the definitions or implications of tidal and magnetic forces, and the discussion may be limited by assumptions about their origins and interactions.

Not related as far as I know.

Not related at all.

you think ,what about it ? (root cause)

Is this an Earth science question and does it belong in that forum?

The source of tides on Earth is the gravitational interaction between the fluid elements of the Earth and the rest of the universe. By far the largest component of this interaction comes from the moon.

The source of geomagnetism lies on the core of the earth. Since the core is at least partly fluid there is some gravitational interaction between this fluid and the rest of the universe. This interaction is different and separate from the interaction producing the ocean tides.

Is this what you are talking about?
