I read your post twice to see if i prefer yours or mine, mine won but i have
different needs, i would be happy if you visit mine, can i visit yours?

heh, of course i'd visit yours... sounds like it'll be a real party over there... course, i'll be quite the young'un, but it'll be good company.

and you definately ought show up at my place. two reasons i want my home: one is to have a wonderful, happy, fun place for my children to call home, and the other is to entertain guests. of course there's my master suite and library for my (and my husband's...) sanity... but mostly its about everyone else in my life. if i ever get a house like that, you can bet i'll be having everyone over for dinner at least once.

That sounds painful, do you have a regeneration chamber, so you can
fight another day, or are you vacuum dust.

Hmmmmm...(just kidding )

My ideal home would have lots of windows - I love bright, sunlit rooms. It would be set in a small clearing in the center of a large, wooded lot (so, that would be brightly sunlit by day, and nothing but stars and moonlight at night, quiet and secluded enough that I don't see my neighbors unless I go looking for them (or vice versa). Inside, it would have a large kitchen with all the best appliances, but to the extent possible, they'd be concealed behind wood panels that blend with the cabinets (I like the conveniences, but it starts to make a kitchen feel cold if the appliances dominate it). Just a half wall separating the kitchen from the family/living room (ideally, this would be a breakfast bar so quick meals or chatting with friends over coffee could be done in my cozy kitchen space...that's why it needs a warm feel because friends gather in kitchens). The family room needs to have bay windows to capture as much sunlight as possible during the day plus room for plants, almost a mini-greenhouse, including one of those little water bubbler things that sounds so tranquil. The family room will have a fireplace too, and will be decorated in warm Earth tones with carpet on the floor. I don't need a separate living room and family room, just one large dual-purpose room; a place that's both inviting for company yet comfortable for just relaxing. The family room and kitchen should both open to a formal dining room (I do enjoy the formal dinner on occassion). The kitchen shouldn't be totally open to the dining room, just a convenient doorway for serving, but the family room should be more open to the dining room, perhaps separated only by french doors or something else so that one can either have a small, intimate dinner party within the formality of the enclosed dining room, or a large, family gathering where the dining table can be expanded outward into the family room to accommodate many more guests for a veritable feast. Off to the other side of the kitchen would be an office. This would be decorated in rich, deep paint colors and wood tones...cherry or mahogany. Again, it must have plenty of bright light, but perhaps high windows over built-in bookcases, and just one nook just the right size for a sofa surrounded by windows and recessed lighting above for basking in luxury while reading. This would be a large room too, as I live in my office as much as my kitchen/family room.

The second floor would be the bedrooms. Three or four bedrooms seems sufficient. The master suite (bedroom, bathroom, walk-in closets) would be at one end, then the staircase would come up the center, and the other end would have the cluster of smaller bedrooms. One would be a guest room, with its own private bathroom. The other one (or two) would be children's rooms with higher windows. These would be separated from the guest room by the guest room bath and a second, interior bathroom that opens into the hallway for kids to use (my ideal house will have a husband and children living in it too ). The laundry room will be on the second floor too. I'm not lugging laundry all the way to some basement laundry room when it's all coming from the second floor.

Outside, I want a big, covered porch in the front with rocking chairs, and a deck and patio area in the back surrounding a small pool (oh, and the deck MUST be made of that maintenance-free composite material), then beyond the patio, ferns and hostas and a little stone path transitioning out into the wooded part of the yard (no lawn to mow!).

But, not that I've thought about this at all or anything.

Usually around $100 per square foot for a finished-out home.

The lot, driveway, sidewalk, plumbing to the street, etc., are extra, though.

Are you referring to a cupola...

...or to something taller?

  • #64
I have thought of a variation/hybrid of Gale's and Danger's concepts.

A multi-tiered house built into a hill-side or mountain-side, overlooking a lake and/or looking down a valley toward a lake or the sea/ocean. Each floor has a balcony with hanging gardens. To one side would be a stream and/or waterfall.

Top level has an observation dome housing a large Dobsonian telescope - at least 30 inches (76 cm) diameter reflector or a Keck-type system.

Lots of windows or skylights to let in natural light.

Certainly flower and vegetable gardens.

A nicely stocked wine cellar (bodega).

Actually, I have a few places in mind.

Remote log cabins in the woods by the lake? Don't you guys watch horror movies? :-p

Does anyone like Georgian, Federal(ist), Neoclassical, or Antebellum homes? http://www.mountvernon.org/virtual/index.cfm/ss/29//cfid/2210564/cftoken/59021841 ), they'd be just about perfect. The columns would stay, of course.

It is no good planning this heist if you can not be serious, the PF gang will
use innovation, some of that womanly guile and super intelligence, on this
caper, now get your thinking caps on, we have to build rome in a day.

Build Rome in a day? I thought we were planning a heist. :-p  Or is building Rome part of the plan? We will use it as a distraction, a decoy? Wow, that's good thinking. But where will we get the materials to build a whole city in a day? We'll have to plan another heist. Don't worry, I'm on it.

Its a corruption of spank, ie his mother gave him a good sponking.

It sure has nothing to do with spunk, at least.

And all this started with those gun totting nuns, any way i have added a cellar
in my plans, just big enough for some fine wines, and i am planning a water
mill, so zooby doesn't have haul water, it will mostly be hidden by the trees
so it won't detract the view.

I think Wolram's house most represents my ideal home.

Being from Michigan I love lakes, the outdoors, and the wilderness. My house would be in the middle of the woods- perhaps on lake Michigan ,or just on some nondescript lake miles from nowhere. The light would cast a suttle autumn glow in the late afternoon on the golden brown leaves that would cover the ground.

The home would be a medium size- suitable for entertaining but not a mansion. A roaring center fireplace is of course a must, where I could entertain guests with some nice wine or a brandy (sherry, beer-pick your poison from the full bar) with a library and a den. comfortable furniture but otherwise very rustic- oak or stone- or a combination of both. Maybe even a log cabin. A large double decker back porch overlooking the lake where I could ponder life and listen to the crickets and katy dids, or watch the fireflies dancing. The lower level would be a walk out from the basement level, with a hot tub front and center so I could view the lake from there.

Someday..
