Identify any errors in the name of each hydrocarbon?

Click For Summary
The discussion revolves around identifying errors in the naming of the hydrocarbon "2,4-diethyloctane." A participant expresses confusion over the structure and naming conventions, particularly regarding the flexibility of carbon chains. They eventually realize that the main carbon chain does not need to be linear and that the drawing can vary due to the rotation of single bonds. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding structural representation in organic chemistry. Overall, the thread emphasizes the nuances of hydrocarbon naming and structural interpretation.

Try to name the structure you have drawn. What is the first step?

I actually figured it out after an hour of struggling. TY :]

What confused me was that the main carbon chain doesn't have to be linear.

It doesn't matter how it is drawn - single bonds rotate.
