Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the note-taking software preferences of university students during lectures and tutorials, as well as their experiences with different methods of note-taking, including digital and handwritten approaches.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the software used for note-taking and the ease of noting mathematical formulas, seeking ratings from others.
  • Another participant argues that writing notes on paper is faster than using computer software.
  • A participant expresses a preference for using a pen, specifically mentioning a Bic ballpoint with a grip.
  • Another participant states that they write on paper for speed.
  • One participant mentions typing faster than writing and uses Libre Office or Open Office, but also enjoys using a fountain pen when possible.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing opinions on the effectiveness and speed of digital versus handwritten note-taking, indicating that there is no consensus on the best method.

Contextual Notes

Some participants provide personal preferences without addressing the potential limitations or advantages of each method in different contexts, such as lecture speed or complexity of material.

Who May Find This Useful

Students considering different note-taking methods, educators interested in student preferences, and developers of educational software.

Hi

For keeping with full disclosure - I hope to use this information to determine the need for an idea I've had that would make the lives of maths/physics students easier.

I have just two questions I hope you can answer...

What software do you use for taking notes during lectures and tutorials?
(i.e. Google Docs, Microsoft Word, ...)

How do you find noting down mathematical formulas using this software?
(a rating of 1-10 with 10 being really simple and 1 being quite complicated)

OPTIONAL QUESTION: If you take notes using a pen and a pad, can you explain why and what might cause you to switch over?

Thanks in advance to everyone who answers!

IMO, if you were to record your lecturer's notes for your personal use, writing it down on a paper is much faster than using computer softwares.

I write on paper. I find it much faster.

I type faster than I write. So, I use Libre Office or Open Office.

That said, any chance I get to use my fountain pen, I will.
