Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the use of desktop wallpapers featuring integral calculus formulas as a study aid for memorization. Participants explore various methods for learning integrals, including the creation of personalized integral tables and the benefits of deriving integrals rather than relying solely on memorization.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks suggestions for desktop wallpapers that include integral calculus formulas to aid in memorization.
  • Another participant suggests creating a personal integral table and reviewing it periodically, emphasizing the importance of deriving integrals instead of merely memorizing them.
  • Some participants agree that while deriving integrals is preferable, certain integrals become memorized through frequent use, leading to a mix of memorization and derivation in their study practices.
  • References to various online resources for integral tables and special integrals are provided, indicating a preference for structured and accessible information.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the value of deriving integrals, but there is a recognition that some integrals are memorized through repetition. The discussion includes differing views on the effectiveness of using wallpapers versus personal study methods.

Contextual Notes

Some participants mention specific integrals that are easier to derive or memorize, but there is no consensus on the best approach to learning integrals. The discussion also highlights the reliance on external resources for integral information.

I find myself at the computer a lot and since I am studying math does anyone have suggestions for desktop wall papers that contain the formulas of integral calculus in order to memorize them?

I have pictures of places I've visited or would like to visit.

Rather - create a file with one's own integral table and browse it periodically. It is better to be able to derive the integrals.

Then there are various kinds of special integrals, e.g.,

I agree that it is better to be able to derive the integrals than to memorize them. However, there are some that come up so often that willy-nilly they have become a part of my muscle memory. There are others that are easy to derive and it's quicker to do that than to look them up. However, if I come across one that I haven't memorized, and whose solution does not come easily to mind, I just look it up. The wiki table is usually all I need, but there was one that I had to look up in Gradshteyn and Ryzhik. Try making that your wallpaper.

Of course that wiki table is well structured and provides useful solution too. In order to make it working coordinate items according to your needs.
