Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the comparative value of obtaining a physics degree from UC Berkeley versus Sacramento State University (SAC State) for employment opportunities in Northern California. It explores the implications of degree types (B.A. vs. B.S.) and their perceived significance in the job market.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions whether a B.S. in Physics from Berkeley offers better opportunities than a B.S. from SAC State specifically for Northern California.
  • Another participant notes that UC Berkeley offers a B.A. in physics or astrophysics, while SAC State provides a B.S. in physics, but Berkeley also has a B.S. in engineering physics.
  • Several participants argue that the difference between a B.A. and a B.S. is trivial, citing examples of prestigious institutions like MIT and Harvard that award B.A. degrees in certain fields.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the significance of the degree type (B.A. vs. B.S.) and its impact on job prospects, indicating a lack of consensus on the matter.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved assumptions regarding the job market's perception of degree types and the specific opportunities available in Northern California.

I'm just curious if there really a better opportunity if I get a BS degree in Physics from Berkeley instead of SAC State if I only wanted to work and live in the Northern California.

The difference between a BA and BS is trivial. For example, some huge name school like MIT or Harvard only gives BA's. Some community colleges give BS's.

Thanks Pengwuino, that was going to my second question after reading the first reply.

MIT gives BSc. or BEng for nearly every (I think it is actually for all but am taking the conservative wording) course if you major in Literature you graduate with a BSc. in Literature.
