If one were to be found, would it be a planet?
A Kuiper Belt Object (KBO) the size of Mars would be classified as a dwarf planet, as it would not have cleared its orbital neighborhood. Mars, significantly larger than any known KBO, is hundreds of times more massive than the largest KBOs. The total mass of the Kuiper Belt is estimated to be less than that of Mars, reinforcing the distinction between planets and dwarf planets based on the criteria set by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
PREREQUISITESAstronomers, planetary scientists, educators, and students interested in planetary classification and the characteristics of celestial bodies in the Kuiper Belt.
