SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the correctness of a Mechanics of Materials solution related to the shortening of bars A-B and B-C. The participant seeks validation for their calculations ahead of an upcoming exam. It is confirmed that the shortening of bar B-C is acceptable, while the shortening of bar A-B requires two distinct expressions: one for the un-drilled portion and another for the drilled portion, which includes an unknown dimension.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Mechanics of Materials principles
  • Familiarity with bar shortening calculations
  • Knowledge of drilled versus un-drilled material properties
  • Basic algebra for solving equations with unknowns
NEXT STEPS
  • Review Mechanics of Materials textbooks for bar shortening calculations
  • Practice problems involving drilled and un-drilled sections of materials
  • Study dimensional analysis in the context of structural engineering
  • Explore online resources or forums for exam preparation tips in Mechanics of Materials
USEFUL FOR

Students preparing for exams in Mechanics of Materials, engineering professionals verifying their calculations, and anyone seeking to enhance their understanding of material behavior under load.

So basically I'm not sure of the solution and just want someone to tell me if what I did is correct. It's important I have an upcoming exam. Thank you.

Your shortening of bar B-C looks ok.
Your shortening of bar A-B should contain two terms: one expression for the un-drilled portion and one expression for the drilled portion. The latter term will contain your unknown dimension.

thank you a lot !
