Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the conceptual understanding of spacetime, particularly whether it can be analogized to whales displacing water in an ocean. Participants explore the implications of this analogy in relation to orbits and the effects of approaching the speed of light.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • One participant proposes that spacetime could be thought of as being displaced by matter and energy, similar to how whales displace water.
  • Another participant seeks clarification on this analogy, asking for more specific examples, such as whether the Earth displaces spacetime to cause the Moon's orbit.
  • A further inquiry is made regarding the relationship between spacetime displacement and the slowing of objects as they approach the speed of light.
  • Some participants express uncertainty about the term "displacing" in relation to spacetime, suggesting it may not be the correct terminology.
  • A participant suggests that the original poster might find a related thread on the nature of spacetime helpful.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the appropriateness of the whale analogy for understanding spacetime. There are multiple competing views and requests for clarification, indicating that the discussion remains unresolved.

Contextual Notes

Participants acknowledge that the term "displacing" may not accurately describe the interaction between matter, energy, and spacetime, indicating a potential limitation in the analogy being used.

I answer many questions thanklessly in IT forums so thank you in advance.

I am trying to understand spacetime. My question is:

Is it right to think of spacetime like whales in an ocean. The way they displace water is the way matter and energy displace spacetime? Or am I thinking in the wrong direction?

thanks :)

Can you be a little more descriptive and specific?

I guess one example would be an orbit. Do I think of the Earth displacing spacetime to cause the moons orbit?

I guess another would be approaching the speed of light. Is it that space time is being displaced & therefore the object is slowed?

I recognize displaced it not the correct term, but I'm trying to wrap my brain around the concept & it is the best word I have at the moment.

Maybe you should try to explain your thoughts in other words. I have no idea what you mean by "displacing spacetime."
