SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the potential impact of an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) attack on the United States and the effectiveness of protective measures like Faraday cages. Participants questioned whether devices encased in metal, such as desktop computers, would inherently provide protection against EMP effects. However, concerns were raised regarding the vulnerability of power systems, particularly how high voltage surges could damage equipment even if it is shielded. Ultimately, the forum moderators closed the discussion due to its sensitive nature.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) effects
  • Knowledge of Faraday cage principles
  • Familiarity with electrical systems and voltage levels
  • Awareness of military and civilian preparedness strategies
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the design and effectiveness of Faraday cages in protecting electronics
  • Study the impact of EMP on electrical infrastructure and mitigation strategies
  • Explore government and military preparedness protocols for EMP attacks
  • Learn about voltage surge protection techniques for sensitive equipment
USEFUL FOR

Emergency preparedness professionals, electrical engineers, military strategists, and anyone interested in national security and infrastructure resilience against EMP threats.

So I watched a video recently on YouTube about how one well placed EMP above the United States would wipe out all electronics and military equipment, but doesn't the government have precautions against this such as the Fariday Cage? Also, since the desktop computer is incased in metal, wouldn't it act as a Fariday Cage by itself and protect the computer from the emp?

Well, if you have everything enclosed in a Faraday cage and run on batteries inside the cage, you are OK.

But now let's look at the real world. What do you reckon will happen when a power cord going from the local step-down transformer sends not the standard 120 volts into the equipment inside the cage but rather sends a couple of thousand volts?

How about when that step-down transformer that normally has a few thousand volts as input is subjected to a few tens of thousands of volts?

Welcome to the PF.

We do not normally allow discussions about EMP here at the PF. Sorry, but this thread is closed.
