The discussion explores simplifying the expression x - x - x, concluding that it equals -x. Participants clarify that subtraction can be viewed similarly to addition by using negative values, as demonstrated with the transformation of x - x into x + (-x). A specific example illustrates subtracting a value multiple times, leading to the realization that x - 26 - 26 - 26 - 26 - 26 can be simplified to x - 5*26. The conversation emphasizes the importance of recognizing patterns in mathematical operations to simplify expressions effectively. Overall, the thread provides insights into simplifying subtraction in algebraic expressions.

Is there a way to simply x-x-x? I know that x+x+x can by simplifed as 3x, but what about subtraction? One would think that if multiplication is just a simplification of addition, then indeed, division is just a simplification of subtraction. I need to know this for an equation I have to make for a software :smile: like always

Any help? x-x-x :rolleyes:

Sure, what does x - x equal? :wink: Also, x - x = x + (-x). And notice that -x = (-1)*x.

It seems that I can just use exponents for this, so let me ask this insead.

I want to subtract m from x n amount of times. Let's say n = 5, m = 10, and x = 26.

x - 26-26-26-26-26

Isnt their a simpler way?

x - 26-26-26-26-26 = x - 5*26

x-x-x = -x

Ok, I got it all down.

m -x-x-x-x = m-(4x)

Thx a lot! :}

Here is a little puzzle from the book 100 Geometric Games by Pierre Berloquin. The side of a small square is one meter long and the side of a larger square one and a half meters long. One vertex of the large square is at the center of the small square. The side of the large square cuts two sides of the small square into one- third parts and two-thirds parts. What is the area where the squares overlap?
