Is this overlap of class intended for stats major program?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the overlap of classes in a statistics major program at a university, specifically whether this overlap is intentional or a result of a mistake during recent curriculum changes. Participants explore the implications of this overlap for fulfilling degree requirements.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions whether the overlap of an emphasis class with a core class is likely intended or a typo, noting recent changes to the program.
  • Another participant suggests that such overlaps may depend on the university's policies and recommends consulting an advisor.
  • Several participants propose that the overlap is likely an accidental duplication resulting from recent changes to core and emphasis requirements, based on their own experiences reviewing departmental information.
  • One participant clarifies that the overlap is not a typo but rather a failure to update the emphasis class, referencing a previous version of the program requirements.
  • Multiple participants emphasize the importance of confirming the requirements with someone knowledgeable in the department.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the overlap is likely unintentional and suggest consulting the department for clarification. However, there is no consensus on whether the overlap is a typo or a failure to update the emphasis class, as some participants interpret the situation differently.

Contextual Notes

The discussion reflects uncertainty regarding the specific policies of the university and the implications of recent curriculum changes. There are references to previous program structures that may not align with current requirements.

above is an url to the stats major program at my school. In red are the two classes that overlap. Is it likely that the overlap is intended, or a typo? Do universities ever allow such overlap (an emphasis class overlaps with a core class)?
They changed it a few months ago. Prior to that change, the science emphasis was this : http://oi59.tinypic.com/33oicr5.jpg

Depends on your university. Ask your advisor.

It's probably an accidental duplication introduced when they changed the core requirements and/or the various "emphasis" requirements at some point, probably fairly recently. I found stuff like this when I went over my college's departmental web pages last year with a fine-tooth comb, comparing them against the major/minor requirements and course descriptions in the official printed catalog. They're surely not going to make you take the same course twice. However, you should clarify with the department, whether you need to take five or six of the other courses listed under "Science Emphasis."

I now understand what you mean. I thought you meant they made a typo when making changes to core classes, but now i know you mean that they also forgot to change the emphasis class that was previously already there. However, this is not the case, because as you can see in http://oi59.tinypic.com/33oicr5.jpg, intro to linear models was previously part of the science emphasis.

In any event, you need to ask someone "in the know" in the department what the requirements really are.
