SUMMARY

The Jeans mass formula is derived by equating gravitational potential energy with the kinetic energy of gas within a specific radius and density. This foundational concept in astrophysics, while historically significant, has limitations and is superseded by more advanced models. The formula helps in understanding the conditions under which gas clouds can collapse to form stars. Users seeking clarity on this topic should focus on the relationship between gravitational forces and gas dynamics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of gravitational potential energy
  • Familiarity with kinetic energy concepts
  • Basic knowledge of gas dynamics
  • Awareness of astrophysical models and their evolution
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the derivation of the Jeans mass formula in detail
  • Explore advanced models of star formation beyond Jeans instability
  • Study the role of density and temperature in gas cloud dynamics
  • Learn about the applications of Jeans mass in modern astrophysics
USEFUL FOR

Astronomy students, astrophysicists, and anyone interested in the dynamics of star formation and gravitational theories.

Jeans mass -- Formula

Hello,

I have gone through Wikipedia, but unable to get what is the formula for Jeans mass.

Any one help please.....

Isn't wikipedias article on Jeans instability, length and mass enough?

Also remember that Jeans work was an early effort that has some problems, there are better models out there.

Equate gravitational potential energy with kinetic energy of the gas for a given radius and density, and then find the mass from that.
