Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on identifying whether a carbon atom is sp3 or sp2 hybridized, focusing on the criteria for classification based on molecular geometry.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose that the classification of carbon as sp3 or sp2 is related to hybrid orbitals.
  • It is suggested that the molecular geometry is a determining factor, with sp2 carbon being trigonal planar and sp3 carbon being tetrahedral.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants appear to agree on the relationship between hybridization and molecular geometry, but the discussion does not resolve any deeper nuances or complexities regarding the topic.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not address potential exceptions or additional factors that may influence hybridization beyond geometry.

How do you know whether a carbon is a sp3 carbon or a sp2 carbon?

Is this with regards to hybrid orbitals?

If it is, you have to look at its molecular geometry. It's sp2 if it's trigonal planar, sp3 if it's tetrahedral.
