AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on preferences between Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems, sparked by the introduction of Intel chips in Macs. Users express strong opinions, with some favoring Macs for their design, simplicity, and perceived immunity to viruses, while others criticize them for high costs and compatibility issues, particularly in gaming. Windows users argue that the larger user base leads to better software availability and gaming options, despite the increased risk of malware. The conversation also touches on historical points about the evolution of computing, with some users highlighting the advantages of Unix-based systems like Mac OS X for programming tasks. Overall, the debate reflects a divide between those who prioritize aesthetics and ease of use versus those who value performance and gaming capabilities.

Just wondering what people prefer. I myself like Mac. And now everything will change with the introduction of the intel chip in Mac computers. What do you all think??

Windows or Linux

I hate nearly everything about Macs, ugh

Mac's are for girls!

I would like to buy a mac, but they are expensive, and I don't want to buy a cheap mac that is slower than my current computer.

As someone who has used both Windows and Mac boxes, I would say that I prefer Windows. Not because there is some intrinsic greatess in the Operating software, but because the number of Windows users outweights Macs users.

I find this fact means, for example, Windows users will be the first to see highly anticipated games released in their platform first (and sometimes, ONLY in their platform). Or, websites generally target Windows Users running IE, and sometimes how the site looks on a Mac browser, or if it is even accessable, are not EVEN CONSIDERED. Well, I could go on, and on...

Yes, that means more viruses and spyware target Windows users, but then again, I'm willing to keep my anti-virus and anti-spyware software uptodate (which is not all that difficult) to keep enjoying the benefits of being in the majority.

I've only used Mac OS 9.2 (at school) and it sucked. so I'd say Windows..

apple's too overpriced...

MACINTOSH ALL THE WAY! APPLE PRODUCTS ARE AWESOME. THink Different! Apple was the first company to introduce the "mouse" to the market, and also are purveyors of fine iPods, iMacs, iBooks, MacBooks, and PowerBooks.

PC's were the first companies to introduce speed into computers :approve: Oh yah, and the iPod alone can be considered reason enough to have apple banished from this planet.

All Apple products are easy to use (the manual for the first generation iMacs was only four pages long).

Apples are simple to use indeed! I mean, that is their target market remember

All Apple products are virtually immune to all spyware, adware, viruses, worms, trojan horses, rootkits, etc..

No they aren't, it's just no one bothers to make many of them for mac's because most people use computers... i mean pc's

This is an argument based on nothing. Most people like iPods. They also sell well. http://www.macminute.com/2003/12/22/ipod

Wikipedia:
The Apple II microcomputer, introduced in 1977, was an instant hit with home users. Apple further shaped the computing industry with the first commercially sold personal computer to use a graphical user interface, the Lisa and then, in 1984, the revolutionary Macintosh. The Macintosh, (commonly called the "Mac") was the first commercially successful implementation of the graphical user interface, which is now an industry standard. Apple is known for its innovative, well-designed hardware, such as the iPod and iMac...

No they aren't, it's just no one bothers to make many of them for mac's.
For that reason, they are.

Yah i guess, i never followed the history anyhow, ill take your word for it.

This is an argument based on nothing. Most people like iPods.

Have you seen people who use iPods? Starbucks coffee, ipod, converse sneakers. That is your typical young american now-a-days. If you can handle these people, more power to you.

For that reason, they are.

Immune is different then untouched.

Is there something bad about these people? Are you discriminating? Shame on you!

Very bad! They alone will signifiy the downfall of society and the destruction of our solar system!

I don't drink panzy coffee.

Really though, everytime i walk into a Starbucks (or any other coffee shop) for my either a) Triple Espresso or b) Double Cappuccino or c) Double Machiatto, I have to suppress my urge to laugh when the blonde haired surfer guy in front of me orders a Non-fat Soy Java Mocha Latte Blast Extra Cream No Whip Decaf. Really, I want to laugh so hard every time.

Right, because everyone loves to lug around a stack of CDs when they want to listen to music on the go.

Apples are simple to use indeed! I mean, that is their target market remember
What's wrong with simplicity as long as it works? I have nothing against PCs, just Windows (you couldn't pay me to go back to using Windows). But, most of the anti-Mac arguments would also apply to alternative OSs on PCs too. If you're more interested in playing games than getting work done, sure, get a PC running windows, but if you want a real computer to get real work done, get anything except windows.

No they aren't, it's just no one bothers to make many of them for mac's because most people use computers... i mean pc's
Uh huh. I don't really care WHY nobody is writing viruses for Macs, I just keep laughing everytime the Windows users are panicking because another new virus is on the loose and every computer in our building is infected except mine and those of a handful of other Mac users. There was one that went around and got so bad, the IT dept started cutting off network access from any location they detected the virus being transmitted from to force people to quarantine and disinfect their computers. I think our IT guy is warming up to Macs though since I haven't bugged him once since I moved here about any problems with my computer, while he's spending a good chunk of every day resolving problems on the windows machines.

Yomamma, OS 9.2 is ancient history. We've had that discussion before. Nobody in their right mind would try arguing that's better than anything. I'm already up to OS 10.4.4 and while I didn't notice any major differences from 10.1 to 10.3 (there were some, but nothing so earth-shattering I'd say one couldn't do without), there are quite a few new features on 10.4 that really do make life easier (my favorite so far is Dashboard...I've decided that while most of the widgets were fun to play with, they aren't really functional, but the ability to post a million stickies and push one button to see them and press it again to not have to look at them is really quite useful, especially for keeping track of frequently needed information...the stuff I used to plaster my desk and walls with sticky notes to keep accessible...it seems like such a minor thing, but so helpful and easy to use). I also like that the search feature (Spotlight) is right up in the top corner of my screen so I don't need to close anything or open new menus or even move windows around to get to it. When I have several windows open and need to get to the desktop to see or do something else, again, a click of a button on the keyboard, and they all move aside...no minimizing them one by one or shuffling them around...and once I've done what I needed to do, another click of the button and they are all restored back to full size. I don't know about you guys, but I've had many times when I'm in the middle of working on something with 4 or 5 programs open and active windows in all of them that I'm shuffling back and forth between when someone walks into my office and needs me to look at another file...clearing all the active stuff out of the way to quickly retrieve it for them and then putting everything right back where I had it to return to what I was doing before the interruption is a wonderful feature.

I can't speak to how any of this would compare to Linux...I have no familiarity with using it, thus wouldn't even try to make a comparison. But if you're comparing it to Windows, in my book, the Mac wins hands-down.

Me: I like Mac. If you do not, fine.
I can not remember my last crash.
I have never had a virus.

And:

Who would you rather have dinner with: Steve Jobs or Bill Gates?

I think we all know the answer.

I run XP, i also cannot remember my last crash or my last virus (outside of one day when i let my nephew on and he screwed everything up... he's a virus himself). And I wouldn't have dinner with either, they are both money hungry.

Macs are love.

It might also be I'm partial to Macs because the programs I need and use were designed for Macs. Sure, you CAN use Illustrator and Photoshop on PCs, but it's just not as smooth. Windows is for officey/business people. Which I am not.

I use windows xp at home and it's probably approaching a few months for uptime. I like xp for media. I use linux on my office computer at school for programming and simulation, but we also have mac computers in the server access lab. They all have their uses. It just depends what you want it for in my opinion. I do use vmware windows->linux and linux->windows as well though.

I did however buy an apple keyboard and love it :) bonus points for having 2 extra usb ports on its back.

Their newest keyboards are fantastic! I no longer wind up with keys sticking because crumbs got in the keyboard. I never knew I could love a keyboard so much. I don't know if they'd hold up to a liquid spill, but if they do, we'll have to recommend them to Evo too.

I've been using my apple keyboard for five years. Had to clean it with alcohol after the apartment caught on fire, but its still in perfect condition. The only bad thing about it, is that the frame is clear, and you can see my hairs than fell through the key-cracks and migrated over to between the help, home, page up, page down, end, and delete keys, and the arrow keys. Where you can see them.

The newer ones are made so that doesn't happen...crud just can't get down inside and trapped there like it did in the older ones (and yeah, that was pretty nasty the way stuff used to get caught in there ).

Mac all the way, although I haven't had a chance to use mine for a few months. I'm going to move them over to the new place. The G3 can go under N/W's monitor, the 7100 under her printer, and the monitor on the top shelf where my printer currently resides. A buddy in the industry can provide me with a switching unit to toggle one monitor and keyboard between the two Macs. (The 7100 is in target mode, so I only need them to start it.)
And, incidentally, I'm very happy with my OS 9.1.

To get back to the original post:

It seems that the switch to intel is necessary to keep up with the "speed game." Since it was Intel, not windows, that brought the speed to PC's. Steve Job's other company (Pixar) had to use machines with intel chips to do the rendering necessary for their animations, and I'll bet that stuck in his craw at least a little bit.

Word going about is that many mac fans will wait at least a little while before getting the Intel generation of iMac. Soon enough it will work out the kinks. It don't matter to me though; my next Mac is two or three years away.

  • #36
I managed to crash a G5 twice after playing on it for under an hour

I've used almost exclusively Windows since my main use for computers is gaming (I used Dos before Windows 95 came out). I've also used Macs, though not nearly as much. Apparently Mac OS X is Unix-based (I don't know this for sure, but my Mac-lover friend says this fairly often).

My next computer will almost definitely be a Mac, but it will have to have an Intel processor, preferably dual core.

I just got the one with the Intel chip. I can't appreciate the full speed of it yet because the software is still designed for the PowerPC processors, so goes through a translation step with something called "Rosetta." But, even with that added step, everything runs as fast as on my G4...I imagine a G5 would seem a bit faster right now. But, everything is due to upgrade to Universal versions of the software soon, which will take full advantage of the Intel processor. No kinks that I've noticed.

Oh and pertaining to this thread

Pc all the way-Better everything, except for looks.

mac's graphic cards are normally intergrated, hence-Pretty bad gameplay.. they don't contain hyperthreading. The Dual Processors however, can become useful. But, macs are more secure.

but if your not worrying about security, then go with pc. Alien wares are some of the best you can get, but really expensive.. you can make your own for 500$ cheaper, and it will be as good.

When people ask me what kind of computer I think they should get they get an answer along the lines of what Moonbear said:

If you're buying a computer for anything other than games, do not bother with Windows (if they had a legitimate non-game related reason for needing Windows, they wouldn't be asking me in the first place, so don't bother telling me other reasons to bother with Windows, I know what they are). If you're buying a computer that you expect to use for at least 4 years, definitely get a Mac. Over that time, the price is not so bad. If you're getting something you only plan on using for a short time before upgrading (like me, where I'm constantly in search of more computational power) get a PC running Linux or BSD or any other *nix on x86(Solaris among them), dependent on what applications you may need. I'm talking about needing to get work done, not to play games with. If you want to play games, you're pretty much stuck with windows.

  • #41
Alienware and Voodoo are pure gaming machines. Apple's integrated graphics cards do not suck, and if you want you can switch it out for a better one.

I managed to crash a G5 twice after playing on it for under an hour
OMG OMG Antichrist! And did you see his wicked smile?

About the speed, I don't get it. I just bought a 2 GHz laptop, and my old 750 MHz iMac is still like twice as fast as it. What's going on?? How can I improve my PC's speed?

Get rid of Windows?

I love seeing Slackware run as fast on a 500 Mhz PIII with 128MB RAM as WinXP on a 1 Ghz P4 with 512 RAM. Its cute.

well i have 3 pcs and 1 mac and generally the mac is a useless piece of crap. i play games and do programming so windows is a must. i don't see why people bother getting g5 macs when all they do is business/word processing work. you really don't need all that power for simple stuff like that. as far as computer virii i don't think I've ever gotten one on my pcs and spyware is easy to stop and remove.

Hi, I'm computergeek, I graduate in may with a mathematics and CS BS... I have used a mac for my entire course work... I also do lots of nice programming fun on the side... Windows is crap for programming as it is pay to play for the most part, Unix based systems are the only way to go, and OS X is one of the best.

yeah, and why they bother getting a PC with more than 1 GHz is a mystery to me(can you see the sarcasm?)

Viruses are not as much of a problem today as they once were because everyone has anti-virus software that breaks their machines thanks norton... (yes it is a purposeful exaggeration ), but spyware is a lot more insidious than you think. spyware protectors cannot stop or remove it all... not even a cocktail can save you.

Seriously, how can anyone like Mac's?

Unfortunatly our Physics department here at Exeter uni Choose to use them and only them! ARGH! They have all just been upgraded to the new flat ones, (cant be bothered to remember what they are called) And they suck sooooooooooo Bad! For example, a friend needed to hand in some work into a folder that was on a server controlled by the person that was teaching that module. The mac then turned around and said, Sorry there is already a copy of this file in this folder. "do you want to over write or cancel?" naturally he pressed cancel. The mac then proceeded to delete both copies of the work! What the hell is the deal with that!

PC all the IMO. :)

Sorry, I don't believe that story. Sounds like someone wanted to blame a Mac for their own mistake. Seriously, Macs don't do that.

I generally don't understand how either side (Mac or PC users) can say "the other one sucks." Neither one sucks, and I think that it is good that there is not only one choice for commercial operating systems, even if one is currently vastly dominant. So, let's be civil here, and save the "you suck, no you suck" comments for a different forum.

[:BACKTRACKING SMILEY]I'm not accusing you of lying. I just never experienced nor heard of this kind of problem. Even still, without knowing more of the situation, I would continue to think that what you describe is a "bug." Bugs can be fixed.
