AI Thread Summary
For someone finishing A-Levels and looking to study mathematics over the summer, the discussion centers on two recommended books: Spivak's Calculus and G.H. Hardy's "A Course of Pure Mathematics." It is suggested to start with Hardy's book, as it is perceived as more accessible, while Spivak's is noted for its difficulty. There is also caution regarding Hardy's effectiveness, with advice to consider alternative resources if it doesn't meet expectations. Spivak's book is acknowledged as valuable but may require supplementary online resources and a flexible approach to problem-solving.

Hello,

I just finished A-Levels (high school) and I bought two maths books to study over summer.

I got Spivak's Calculus and "A Course of Pure Mathematics" by G.H.Hardy.

With which book should I start? Or should I learn from them simultaneously?

Regards,

If you're set to choose between these two, I'd probably go for "A Course of Pure Mathematics" first. Spivak's book is considered to be a very hard book to go through.

Thanks.

I'm not convinced that Hardy's book is a good book. If you find it isn't so good, look for another. Spivak is good but don't take it too seriously, be prepared to skip a few problems or to read more about topics online (if you need to I mean).

Hi, I have notice that Ashcroft, Mermin and Wei worked at a revised edition of the original solid state physics book (here). The book, however, seems to be never available. I have also read that the reason is related to some disputes related to copyright. Do you have any further information about it? Did you have the opportunity to get your hands on this revised edition? I am really curious about it, also considering that I am planning to buy the book in the near future... Thanks!
