The scope includes technical troubleshooting and user experiences related to software installation on Unix-based systems.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that OSX Yosemite has broken Matlab, expressing reluctance to pay for an upgrade to the latest version.
  • Another participant proposes two main options: upgrading to R2014b or downgrading the operating system to Mavericks, indicating that the upgrade may be worth the cost due to new features.
  • A different participant mentions considering using Boot Camp to run Windows, while expressing uncertainty about the performance of running Matlab on Parallels.
  • One participant notes that installing Matlab on Unix-based systems has historically been problematic.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best solution, as multiple competing views regarding upgrading, downgrading, and alternative installation methods are presented.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of detailed information on the specific issues caused by Yosemite, as well as the potential performance implications of using virtualization software like Parallels.

Looks like OSX Yosemite broke Matlab. I don't want to spend 100$ to upgrade to this year's version just to make it work. Suggestions?

It's kind of a tough spot. You probably need to either upgrade MATLAB, or downgrade Yosemite to Mavericks.

Of the two options, I'd say upgrade to R2014b. It has tons of new features anyway (as well as a new graphics system), so it's well worth the $100.

I just thought of this. Gonna have to Boot Camp. Got a few copies of Windows here anyway.

Wanted to run Parallels but not sure about performance.

Matlab has always been a pain to install on Unix-based systems.
