Why Convex Mirrors are Used in Late Model Cars

Click For Summary
Convex mirrors are used in late model cars primarily because they provide a wider field of view, which is crucial for spotting potential blind spots on the passenger side. This design allows drivers to see more of their surroundings, enhancing safety. The warning that objects may be closer than they appear is a result of the mirror's distortion, which is necessary for the expanded visibility. Additionally, convex mirrors help reduce glare and improve visibility in low light conditions. Overall, their use is a significant safety feature in modern vehicles.

The rear view on the passenger side of late model cars warn us theat objects may be closer than they appear. I think the mirror used is convex. But why is that type of mirror selected?

Because it enlarges your angle of vison.

Convex mirrors are used in late model cars because they provide a wider field of view compared to flat mirrors. This is especially important for the passenger side mirror, as it allows the driver to see a larger area and potential blind spots. The warning on the mirror that objects may be closer than they appear is due to the convex shape, which causes a slight distortion in the image. However, this distortion is necessary to provide the wider field of view. Additionally, convex mirrors also help to reduce glare and improve visibility in low light conditions. Overall, the use of convex mirrors in late model cars is a safety feature that helps drivers to have a better understanding of their surroundings while on the road.

The book claims the answer is that all the magnitudes are the same because "the gravitational force on the penguin is the same". I'm having trouble understanding this. I thought the buoyant force was equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. Weight depends on mass which depends on density. Therefore, due to the differing densities the buoyant force will be different in each case? Is this incorrect?
