SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the most in-demand engineering fields globally, with a strong emphasis on Civil Engineering as a top choice. Participants highlight the importance of specialization, noting that a focus on fluid flow within aerospace engineering can enhance marketability compared to other specializations like robotics in mechanical engineering. The consensus underscores that even in economically challenged regions, the need for infrastructure such as bridges, roads, and sewers ensures a steady demand for civil engineers. Overall, the conversation reflects a practical approach to engineering education and career planning.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of engineering disciplines, particularly Civil Engineering and Aerospace Engineering
  • Knowledge of market trends in engineering job demand
  • Familiarity with specialization areas within engineering fields
  • Awareness of global infrastructure needs and challenges
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the current job market for Civil Engineering in various countries
  • Explore specialization options within Aerospace Engineering, focusing on fluid dynamics
  • Investigate the role of engineers in global infrastructure projects
  • Learn about the impact of economic conditions on engineering demand in different regions
USEFUL FOR

Prospective engineering students, career advisors, and professionals considering a shift in their engineering specialization will benefit from this discussion.

I'm going to be applying for school in the next couple of years and I want to study engineering. However, I may want to move around throughout my life and I was wondering which engineering(s) have the best worldwide demand? Don't be alarmed, I won't study anything I dislike just because of the demand, but it is a factor in my decision. Also, I am curious as to what kind of engineers are in high demand in certain countries, so any information you can throw at me is greatly appreciated.

As my physics prof always says, an engineer's an engineer. It all depends on how you sell yourself. If I specialize in fluid flow with my aerospace degree, I'd probably be more marketable than the mechanical engineer that specialized in robotics. But really, I think the best answer I can give you (and I hate myself for it) is Civil Engineering. Even poor as dirt African communities need bridges and roads and sewers.

That was my thought, too - good old CE. Infrastructure is destiny!
