Mw 7.7 SE of Loyalty Isl. - SW Pacific

In summary, on February 10th, a Mw 7.7 quake occurred southeast of the Loyalty Islands, near the Pacific-Indo Australian plate boundary. This location is ESE of New Caledonia and SSE of Vanuatu. The main shock was preceded by several smaller earthquakes and followed by many aftershocks, with the largest being an Mw6.4. The earthquake was strong enough to max out a main long period seismometer, with multiple aftershocks showing on intermediate period channels. There are many loops like this one on the Pacific-Indo Australian plate boundary, which is not always a single fault line.

A very large Mw 7.7 quake occurred Se of the Loyalty Islands on the 10 Feb ( UT)
This location is ESE of New Caledonia and SSE of Vanuatu.

Time: 2021-02-10 13:19:55 (UTC)
Location: 23.054°S 171.601°E
Depth: 10.0 km

M 7.7 - southeast of the Loyalty Islands (usgs.gov)

It maxed out my main long period seismometer
The main shock was preceded by a number of M5+ and two M6+ events
There have been many M5+ and several M6+ aftershocks. The largest aftershock so far is an Mw6.4

Long period high gain channel, centered on 15 seconds

I thought the fire ring was the border of the pacific plate. Where do those earthquakes in the middle of the plate come from?

They are on the Pacific - Indo Australian plate boundary, and definitely not in the middle of a plate

If you look around the boundary, you will find lots of loops like this one. The boundary isn't always a single fault line.

Northern end PNG to Japan via Philippines, note the big loop east of the Philippines

1. What is the meaning of "Mw" in the earthquake measurement?

The "Mw" in the earthquake measurement stands for Moment Magnitude. It is a measure of the size of an earthquake based on the amount of energy released.

2. Where exactly is the location of the earthquake?

The earthquake occurred approximately 225 kilometers southeast of the Loyalty Islands in the South Pacific Ocean.

3. How strong was the earthquake?

The earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 7.7 on the Moment Magnitude scale. This is considered a major earthquake and can cause significant damage.

4. Was there a tsunami warning issued for this earthquake?

Yes, a tsunami warning was initially issued for the Loyalty Islands and surrounding areas, but it was later cancelled as the earthquake did not generate a significant tsunami.

5. Are there any reports of damage or casualties from this earthquake?

As of now, there have been no reports of damage or casualties from this earthquake. However, it is always important to take necessary precautions and follow any evacuation orders in the event of a major earthquake.
