AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on a series of Java applet programs called "Sheep," with versions ranging from 0.00 to 0.06 available for testing. The creator requests feedback on these applets, particularly version 0.03, which contains two significant bugs—one stemming from the creator's code and another from the Java API. The applet features a popup menu accessible via right-click on Windows, and the creator seeks confirmation on whether this functionality works on non-Windows systems like Macs and Solaris, as a separate routine has been implemented for those platforms. Users are encouraged to test the applets and report their findings, especially regarding the identified bugs and the popup menu functionality.

My "Sheep" applets. Would you test them?

I've been writing little applet programs in Java. I'd appreciate it if you could test them.

They are called Sheep (So, you can't sleep, huh?) version 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04a, 0.05, and 0.06.

They are all at:

Try version 0.03

In version 0.03, there are two big bugs. (One is caused by a flaw in my program. The other one is caused by Sun Microsystems' Java API set itself.)

They are both very visual and obvious once you find them. Can you find out what they are?

Do my Sheep applets run at all on non-Windows computers such as macs and Solaris?

My "sheep" applets version 0.03 and later have a popup menu which can be brought op by right-clicking on Windows computers. Can Mac and Solarises users bring up the popup menu on their computers? I have implemented a separate routine to bring up the popup menu on Macs and Solarises but haven't tested on them myself. I'd appreciate the feedback from people who have access to them.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
