Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding a book that contains numerous Set Theory word problems with solutions, particularly those suitable for standardized tests or educational settings. The scope includes recommendations for resources that focus on practical applications of Set Theory rather than theoretical formulations.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests recommendations for books with many Set Theory word problems and solutions.
  • Several participants suggest searching online marketplaces like eBay or Amazon for relevant books.
  • A participant notes that many available books are introductory or textbook in nature and expresses a desire for resources that include practical word problems, similar to those found on standardized tests.
  • Another participant suggests looking for an instructor's manual to a student textbook as a potential resource.
  • One participant raises a concern that the terms "set theory" and "word problems" may contradict each other in a university math context, emphasizing that set theory typically deals with formulas rather than word problems.
  • This participant also inquires if the original poster is specifically looking for word problems involving Venn diagrams and requests examples of the types of problems they are interested in.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the compatibility of Set Theory with word problems, with some suggesting that they are not typically aligned. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the availability of suitable resources.

Contextual Notes

There is a lack of consensus on what constitutes a suitable resource for Set Theory word problems, and the discussion highlights potential limitations in the definitions and expectations surrounding the topic.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals seeking educational resources for Set Theory, particularly those interested in practical applications for middle and high school students, may find this discussion relevant.

Hi - Glad to have found this forum. I am looking for a book which contains LOTS of Set Theory word problems with solutions.

Anyone aware of a good resource?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I actually did this but most of the books were of the textbook or intro nature. Looking for a source with lots of WORD problems (something similar to what might be on a standardized test).

You should try looking for an instructors manual to a student textbook

Anyone have ideas on this?

I am not sure I have recommendation, but since this thread is already going, I wanted to say that "set theory" and "word problems" are somewhat a contradiction in terms, especially in the context of university math. Even naive set theory (and especially axiomatic set theory) is usually concerned with formulas, such as "Prove that $\overline{A\setminus B}=\overline{A}\cup B$". Are you talking about word problems with Venn diagrams? Could you give an example of problems you are interested in?

Thanks very much for taking time to reply. I'm looking for something like this that would be appropriate for high school students, middle school students, and possibly even younger:

Again, thanks for the input.
