SUMMARY

The forum discussion centers on a practice MCAT question regarding the acidity of terminal alkynes. The answer key indicates that the correct answer is D, but participants express confusion over the explanation provided, particularly regarding the role of the alcohol group and the definition of amphoteric substances. The consensus is that the explanation is flawed, leading to the conclusion that there is likely a mistake in the answer key. Participants confirm they are using the same edition of the reference book.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of amphoteric substances in chemistry
  • Knowledge of terminal alkynes and their acidity
  • Familiarity with MCAT exam structure and question types
  • Experience with chemistry textbooks and answer keys
NEXT STEPS
  • Review the concept of amphotericity in organic compounds
  • Study the acidity of terminal alkynes in detail
  • Examine common mistakes in MCAT practice questions
  • Compare different editions of MCAT preparation books for discrepancies
USEFUL FOR

MCAT students, chemistry educators, and anyone preparing for standardized tests that include organic chemistry concepts.

The answer key states the the answer is D but the explanation makes no sense to me. “ amphoteric means that it could behave either as an acid or as a base. The alcohol group is not the key in aqueous solution. Terminal Alkynes are acidic”. I don’t see a terminal triple bond.

Nor do I. I assume there must be a mistake in the book. (You have got the right answer book for the right questions, haven't you? Same edition of both?)

Yes, it must be a book mistake. Thank you.
