What is the reaction force when hammering a nail?

SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the action-reaction forces involved when hammering a nail, as defined by Newton's Third Law of Motion. The action is the force exerted by the hammer on the nail, while the reaction is the normal force exerted back onto the hammer by the nail. Additionally, inertia is described as an inherent property of all matter, which prevents objects from accelerating without an applied force. This fundamental understanding of forces and inertia is crucial for comprehending basic physics principles.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Newton's Third Law of Motion
  • Basic knowledge of forces and reaction forces
  • Familiarity with the concept of inertia
  • Awareness of mass as a property of matter
NEXT STEPS
  • Study Newton's Laws of Motion in detail
  • Explore examples of action-reaction pairs in everyday scenarios
  • Investigate the role of inertia in different physical systems
  • Learn about the applications of forces in engineering and mechanics
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators teaching basic mechanics, and anyone interested in understanding the fundamental principles of forces and motion.

1. Why is inertia called an inherent property?

2. According to third law of motion, specify the action and reaction while hammering a nail.

Action is hammering but what's the reaction?

What do you mean by the "action is hammering" The hammer strikes the nail: what is the action, and what is the reaction in this situation?

reaction:Ouch when he misses?

action: The force of the hammer exerted on the nail
reaction: The normal force the hammer exerts back onto the hammer

Inertia is an inherent property since it is simply something all things (matter) have. For example, inertia is an inherent property of mass, because without it, everything would be prone to acceleration with virtually no force applied.
(My explanation of inertia isn't that thorough).

Nail pushes back on the hammer >.<

inertia is an inherent property because all matter posses it, it is not unique to a special type.

AndreJ beat me to it >.<

thnx.....
