Nominal stress for a plate with fillet radius with holes

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around determining the nominal stress for a right-angled plate with a fillet radius and two holes. Participants are seeking equations and methods relevant to this problem, which involves aspects of mechanical engineering and stress analysis.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests equations to calculate the nominal stress for a specific plate geometry.
  • Another participant seeks clarification on the geometry, suggesting that an angle section may be what is meant by the right-angled plate.
  • A different participant emphasizes the need to provide geometry and applied load details to obtain accurate stress concentration factors.
  • The original poster confirms the geometry and specifies that the load is applied horizontally, indicating a desire for guidance rather than a definitive solution.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need for specific equations and details regarding the geometry and loading conditions, but there is no consensus on the exact approach or equations to use.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of specific equations provided, dependence on the precise definitions of the geometry, and the need for further details on the applied load to refine the analysis.

Who May Find This Useful

Students and professionals in mechanical engineering or materials science interested in stress analysis and design considerations for structural components.

By a right angled plate with a fillet radius, do you mean an angle section like this? Please be more specific. www.engineersedge.com/standard_material/Steel_angle_properties.htm

In order to get proper stress concentration factors, you'll to show geometry as well as applied load.

Yes that picture is what I am talking about. Load is applied horizontally at the highest point on the left hand side. I don't want a definite answer, just want to know what equations to use or how to go about finding the nominal stress, Thanks
