SUMMARY

Petrol is suitable as a fuel due to its low boiling point, which allows for easy combustion and energy production in vehicles. In contrast, lubricating oil has a high boiling point, preventing it from combusting and enabling it to remain in a liquid state for effective lubrication of machine joints. The discussion emphasizes the importance of boiling points in determining the suitability of petroleum fractions for specific applications.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of organic chemistry principles
  • Knowledge of boiling point concepts
  • Familiarity with combustion processes
  • Basic understanding of viscosity and its effects on lubricity
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the relationship between boiling points and fuel efficiency in hydrocarbons
  • Study the properties of lubricating oils and their viscosity characteristics
  • Explore the combustion process of different petroleum fractions
  • Investigate the role of viscosity in lubrication and its impact on machine performance
USEFUL FOR

Students studying organic chemistry, automotive engineers, and professionals involved in petroleum product applications.

Homework Statement

Why is petrol suitable to be used as a fuel whereas lubricating oil is more suited to lubricate machine joints?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

Petrol has a low boiling point. It combusts more easily to provide energy to the car. However, lubricating oil does not combust easily due to its high boiling point and would remain in its liquid state to serve its purpose of lubricating.

I jus began organic chemistry today and i am wondering if my following answer is correct. Do guide me along

It isn't a question of combustion but of lubrication. How might viscosity affect lubricity?
