Good afternoon,
This is not Paul, but rather his son Robert. I am very sad to write here that my dad passed away on Saturday after mounting health issues. He spoke often of his pleasure at reading and participating on this forum and was very pleased at the times he received one of the community awards. Thank you all for the time you spent here with him.
Robert

This is not the context in which he would post this image, but it seems appropriate anyway.

Thank you for the update Robert, and I'm very sorry for the loss to you and your family. Paul was an amazing member here, with many many valuable posts. I hope you are okay with reading back through some of them to see how integral he was here at PF. You can see those posts by clicking on USER at the top right of the page, clicking on his username and then clicking on Postings. That will show you his posts in reverse time order. You can also do a forum Search (at the upper right of each page) and fill in his username.

He will be missed very much here, as I am sure he is missed by your family. My impression is that he has led a long and wonderful life, which is a good thing. RIP.

My sincere sympathy to you and your family at this sad moment.

Very very sad news indeed.

Phinds did not suffer fools but he was an absolute gent. Took the time to reply to my DMs over the years.
I'm sorry for your loss Robert, he will be missed here too fella.

I first thought I’d never communicated with the man but given we’ve both been here ~15 years that seemed implausible, and, lo and behold, a quick search later proved we’d had several exchanges. However small.

My condolences too.

Oh sorry to hear this. His posts were always well thought out and worth the time to understand. A great contributor to physicsforums.

Paul and I exchanged some direct messages earlier this year. And he kindly sent me a book, wouldn't accept any payment, not even postage. He just wanted to pass the book along.

requiescat in pace

The only member of PF that I sent a log to.
Godspeed, Paul, and my apologies for being the ultimate procrastinator, as I was within the last 3 years actually able to afford and seriously was considering buying a half dozen of your most exquisite bowls.

ps. I didn't find out until yesterday that you had a youtube channel.

Dear Robert,

My condolences to you and your family. He was a great contributor to the PF community.

We will miss him. I will miss his balloonology reference in his PF signature.

====================================================================

ONE FURTHER NOTE: My suggestion to Paul's family is to SECURE his site: phinds.com and decide what should remain public and what should be private.

Paul has posted many family pictures there that should be SAVED and kept PRIVATE.

Make a memorial of Paul's site in his honor.

And now onto the Balloonology:

THE BALLOON ANALOGY

The body of this article has been printed in the Physics Forum "Insights" blog and at the request of the forum owner, I have removed the body from this page so as to not cause the Physisc Forum to get a warning from Google that it has material that appears elsewhere. The body is now at:

The Balloon Analogy on PF

Here's a JAVA-based moving model of the expansion. I don't care for it myself but it is highly regarded by some and is often linked to in answering questions about the balloon analogy and/or the expansion of the universe: Ned Wright's Java-based model

And here is an excellent discussion: Misconceptions About the Big Bang

A couple of other good ones:

a brief history of cosmology --- two pages on your computer screen

a history of cosmology theories from the Greeks to now --- a considerably more extensive discussion

Sean Carroll's Cosmology Primer --- an extensive discussion

errors in some popular attacks on the big bang --- may dispel any misconceptions you might have
