Also got into the NUF, I'll be spending the summer doing a theory project at Princeton.
The discussion revolves around the application process for Physics Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) for the summer of 2011. Participants share their application strategies, experiences, and concerns regarding competitiveness in securing positions in various programs.
Participants generally agree that the REU application process is competitive and that various factors influence acceptance. However, there are multiple competing views regarding the importance of GPA, research experience, and the criteria used by different programs, leaving the discussion unresolved.
Some participants reference personal experiences and statistics from previous years, indicating that there may be a lack of clarity regarding the selection criteria for REUs. Additionally, there are mentions of varying application deadlines and the ongoing nature of the application process.
Students considering applying for REUs, particularly those in physics or related fields, may find this discussion relevant as it highlights various strategies, experiences, and insights into the application process.
hadsed said:Jack, that is peculiar. I was under the impression that NASA principal investigators would have already made their decisions before the deadline. I got an email from one at JPL wondering if I was interested in his project, and he told me that the way it works is that they request that the PI's send a list of 5 students ranked from best choice to ...less best choice... and then they would be picking that way (plus remembering after 5 days an offer expires and goes to the next person).
Since I wasn't offered the day after March 15th, I assumed I wasn't going to get an offer.
Also to note, I wasn't accepted to Rochester or RPI. I'm a first year student, if anyone was wondering.
